If You Smell Gas Now

Do these things in order and do not go looking for the source yourself.

  1. Get everyone out

People first, pets if they come easily, then stay out.

  2. Leave doors open

on your way through so the house vents behind you.

  3. Touch nothing electrical

No light switches, no fans, no phones used inside, no flames.

  4. Call from outside

on (07) 3067 4289. If the smell is strong, someone feels dizzy or unwell, or you can hear gas hissing, call triple zero as well.

  5. Turn the supply off at the meter only if the meter sits on your way out

and you can reach it without ducking back inside. Otherwise leave it and tell us where it is.

Where Gas Leaks Start

From a two-minute fix to a full line replacement, the smell alone rarely tells you which one you have.

  1. A pilot that has blown out

The simplest cause, common on older cooktops and space heaters, and the reason a faint smell sometimes appears with no leak at all.

  2. A loose connection

Bayonet fittings and flexible hoses behind cooktops and heaters shake loose over years of wiping down and heavy pots.

  3. An ageing copper run

Gas copper in older houses has flexed through decades of Brisbane summers, and a tired joint can seep slowly inside a wall cavity.

  4. A corroded outdoor line

Exposed steel runs rust from the outside in and weep long before they look failed.

What You Can Check Safely

Your checks happen from outside, full stop. Stand in the yard and note whether the smell is stronger near the meter, near a wall where a heater sits, or near the cooktop vent, because that tells us where to test first.

What never to do. Don't hunt for the leak with a flame, a lighter or a soapy brush on live pipework, and don't pull appliances out to look behind them. The gap between finding it and feeding it is one spark, and no repair is worth that.

When to Call in Banyo

Call us straight away, from outside, for any of these:

  • Any smell of gas, indoors or out, faint or strong.
  • A hissing sound near a line, an appliance or the meter.
  • Plants dying in a line along the yard where nothing else explains it.
  • An appliance that blows its pilot out repeatedly or smells when it starts.
  • Bubbling in puddled water or wet ground along a pipe route after rain.

If you're unsure whether it counts, treat it as though it does. A gas call that turns out to be a blown pilot costs you very little. The call you don't make is the one that matters.

What We Do About It

  1. Make it safe

Our gasfitter isolates the supply first and cuts the affected section off from the rest of the line, so nothing flows while the search happens.

  2. Find it, then quote it

The pipework is pressure tested one section at a time until the faulty joint or length reveals itself, a written price is provided before any repair begins, and the line is proven sound with appliances relit and checked before we leave.

Planned work like new bayonet points or a cooktop swap sits on our gas fitting page rather than under the emergency banner.

Old Streets and Damp Ground

Two things about this suburb shape gas work here more than people expect.

  1. The station-side houses

Gold, Froude and Musgrave Streets carry homes that went up before 1947, and their gas runs were threaded in long afterwards, so joints that have worked for decades in old cavities are the first place a smell starts.

  2. The ground

Most of the suburb lies over mapped acid sulfate soil, and the low flats between the two waterways never fully dry out, so steel gas pipe laid shallow or beneath a floor rusts out faster than the same fitting on high, dry ground.

That combination means an outdoor gas line here gets inspected rather than assumed fine, and it's why we test the whole run, not just the stretch that smells.

Gas Work We Cover

Every gas job on this page is carried out by a licensed gasfitter, with the price agreed before tools come out:

Leaking Gas Lines

We trace the leaking section, isolate it from the supply at the meter, then repair or replace the failed pipe and pressure test the line before your appliance runs again.

Appliance Repairs

Cooktops, ovens, space heaters and water heaters that smell, blow out or will not light get checked, adjusted or repaired on the spot so they burn cleanly and safely again.

New Installations

New bayonet points, cooktop and oven connections, and gas runs for heaters or outdoor barbecues are installed, tested and certified, with the price agreed in writing before the work begins.

Isolating and Testing

When a smell has no obvious source, we isolate sections of pipework and test each one, which finds the leak without tearing open walls or lifting up any floors.

Where the Smell Comes From

Four problems cover almost every gas call we take on these streets:

  1. Aged Copper Runs

Gas copper near the station has worked hot and cold for generations, and a fatigued joint or a kinked length can weep inside a cavity for weeks before anyone notices.

  2. Cooktop Connections

Hoses and bayonet fittings behind cooktops undo a quarter turn at a time over years of cleaning, and a connection sitting half off will hiss faintly at the brass join.

  3. Corroded Outdoor Line

Steel running exposed along a wall or under a floor weeps long before it looks failed, and acid sulfate ground on low flats keeps rust eating from the outside in.

  4. A Dying Appliance

A space heater or water heater with a cracked burner or tired seals can leak on start-up, and an appliance near the end of its life needs replacing, not adjusting.

Why Fast Gas Action Matters

Gas does not wait politely for a convenient time, so the response can't either:

  1. Health first

Gas displaces the air you breathe, and a slow seep indoors overnight is more dangerous than a loud one you notice at lunchtime. Getting out early is the whole game.

  2. One spark changes the job

A tiny seep is a repair. The same seep plus a light switch or a water heater ignition becomes a fire or worse. Isolation before investigation is what keeps a small job small.

  3. The damage compounds

A line that weeps for weeks corrodes further, dries out seals down the run and stresses the appliance burning off bad supply. Caught early, it's one joint. Left alone, it's a line.

Our Gas Leak Process

  1. 1

    Ring and describe it

Call (07) 3067 4289 and walk us through what's going on in Banyo. A couple of quick questions help us bring the right parts the first time.

  2. 2

    Flat-rate price, agreed first

You see flat-rate pricing with no hidden fees before the work begins. Say yes and we start.

  3. 3

    Find it and fix it

We isolate the gas supply, pressure test the pipework section by section, repair or replace what has failed, then we prove the whole line holds pressure before anything gets relit.

  4. 4

    Pay when it's done

Card or EFTPOS on site once the job's finished, or ask about Fix now, pay later.

Gas Questions From Banyo

Call (07) 3067 4289

What should I do first if I smell gas in my Banyo home?

Get everyone outside straight away, leave doors open behind you, and call (07) 3067 4289 from the street rather than inside, without flicking switches, lighting anything or going back in to investigate.

Does a gas smell in a Banyo hallway always mean a leaking pipe?

Not always, because a blown pilot, a hose half undone behind a cooktop or an appliance failing on start-up can all release odour, though every smell gets treated as a leak until tested.

Who is responsible for the gas pipes on my property?

Pipework on your side of the meter belongs to you, the same way your water service line does, so repairs and testing on property-side gas lines are owner's work that we carry out.

Do the pre-1947 houses near the station need extra gas care?

They can, because gas runs fitted long after those Gold Street and Froude Street houses went up thread through older cavities, and joints that have worked loose for decades are the first places we test.

Is a faint smell near the gas meter an emergency in Banyo?

Treat it as one, because a weak smell at the meter or along an outdoor line can still build indoors overnight, so stay clear of the spot and call us rather than watching it.

How do I book a gas plumber in Banyo?

Ring (07) 3067 4289 from somewhere safe, describe the odour you notice and its location, and we will guide you on keeping safe while a licensed gasfitter makes their way to you in Banyo.
